Web Browsers
There are two
main browsers used
- Internet Explorer - from
Microsoft.
- Netscape Navigator - from
Netscape.
Electronic Mail
This is one of
the major services provided by the Internet.
- To send an e-mail one
need the following
- E-mail client.
- An e-mail address.
- The SMTP server
- To receive an e-mail one
needs the following
- A POP server
- A POP ID
- A password
- E-mail clients
- Outlook Express -
e-mail client comes along with IE.
- Netscape Messenger
- e-mail client comes along with Navigator.
- Eroda Light - A stand
alone e-mail client.
File Transfer
Protocol
- This is a part of a software
used to transfer files from one computer to other
- The FTP servers can be
accessed using a web browser and login using a user name and password
or without, depending upon the type of FTP site.
- Files can be down loaded
by usual windows file copy methods.
- To upload files to a FTP
site we require a special FTP program like FTP
Explorer .
Newsgroups
- It is distributed bulletin
board (called Usenet) to
which any user can post a news item using an e-mail client.
- Usenet originally created
by Duke University in 1979.
- Newsgroups are useful
to obtain unbiased information which will be useful to analyze a situation.
- Newsgroups can be found
by a web search may be using DejaNews
(now a part of Googles )
Gopher
Telnet
- An oldest way to access
information.
- Using the TELNET protocol
a computer can be connected to another and use that computer to gather
information.
Search Engines
- Search engines are powerful
utilities used to search the web for a particular information.
- Search Engines are composed
of large data base of URLs supplied by their webmasters.
- When a search query is
keyed in to a search engine the robot-an automated program searches
its database for similar words and resultant URLs are displayed.
- The search engines ranks
the search results. The more it encounters the keyword entered while
initiating the search, the higher the rank the result gets. This gives
the user an idea to that the results ranked high will have more relevant
pages, he/she looking for.
Yahoo
- It was created in1994.
- In addition to search
capability it also has categorized indexes to several site.
- Yahoo is not case sensitive.
Infoseek
- It offers two level of
search. "General" the default and "Advanced" for experienced users.
- It gives an option to
search only a particular category.
Atlavista
- Created in 1995 by Digital
Equipment Inc.
- It uses a spider program
that search every websites for updates on regular basis and checked
for updates less frequently than the other that do change often.
Other Web Search Engines
Archie
- Archie is an old utility
to search for FTP resources.
- To connect to an Archie
server using TELNET.
- A Web Browser also can
be used to search Archies using the link http://archie.emnet.co.uk/services.html.
Veronica
- Very Easy Rodent-Oriented
Netwide Index to Computer Archie.
- Used to search Gopher
sites.
